As we approach mid-year and the country continues to follow the roadmap out of lockdown, the market demand for childcare sector is surging. At Redwoods Dowling Kerr, we have completed a stunning 61 business transactions in the sector so far in 2021, highlighting the renewed interest in childcare opportunities. With the increasing demand for childcare settings, we explain the qualities of a successful nursery.

Environment:

A child will do a large portion of their development at nursery and so the environment should be filled with bright, stimulating colours and activities The equipment children use must also be safe, and a successful nursery will adhere to all Health and Safety regulations in order to provide a child with a positive and safe environment.

Qualified Staff:

Any childcare setting must have a high standard of staff. There must be enough staff to accommodate the children in their care, with the standard ratio being 1 staff member per 8 children. Staff must be qualified to work with children, with at least one member being equipped with a First Aid Certificate. By having high standards of staff in a childcare setting, a nursery will receive an excellent reputation.

Ofsted Rating:

The Ofsted rating of a nursery has a significant impact on attracting new parents and children. Ofsted are responsible for inspecting and regulating services that care for children and will grade them on a four-point scale. A successful nursery would typically receive ‘Grade 1’ (Outstanding) or ‘Grade 2’ (Good). When parents are selecting a nursery for their child, the Ofsted rating is one of the first things they will research.

Location:

The location of a nursery also has an impact on the success of the business. If a nursery is remote and does not have good travel links, it is not as accessible for all parents and thus will impact on its success. Many successful nurseries are easy to travel to by both car and on public transport. A nursery will be able to cement a good reputation if it is accessible for all parents.

Facilities:

A nursery must provide suitable facilities for group activities with children, such as a playroom and an outdoor area. A successful nursery will have different areas within the building to accommodate children’s activities that can be easily adapted to suit different kinds of play and learning. Furthermore, the nursery must have acceptable space for a child’s belongings, such as bags and coats, as well as toilet facilities.
